Nestled in the heart of Canley Vale, Thanh Xuan is a Vietnamese restaurant that embraces simplicity and authenticity with a focused menu featuring just three hearty dishes: Bún Riêu, Bánh Canh, and a classic Chicken Rice dish. This deliberate minimalism speaks to the confidence in their craft, offering guests a true taste of Vietnam’s homestyle cooking with every bowl.
Step inside Thanh Xuan, and you’ll find a modest yet inviting atmosphere where the spotlight is firmly on the food. The ambience is unpretentious, reflecting the essence of a local gem where every dish carries the warmth and familiarity of a home-cooked meal. It might not boast the flair of gourmet dining, but it delivers something far more comforting and genuine.
The Bánh Canh noodles are celebrated for their satisfying texture — thick, chewy, and perfectly prepared to soak up the flavorful broth. The Bún Riêu, a tomato-based crab noodle soup, stands out with a balanced, fragrant broth that envelops fresh pork slices and delicious crab cakes, offering layers of savory, subtly sweet, and umami notes. For those seeking something a little different, the Bún Mắm is a bold seafood broth richly complemented by fresh herbs and banana blossom, capturing a deep and memorable punch of flavor that’s hard to find elsewhere in Sydney.
What truly elevates Thanh Xuan’s dishes is the delicate harmony of ingredients that surprise and delight with every spoonful. The soft pork slices melt in your mouth, while touches like the golden egg patty in the soup absorb the broth’s essence, creating an added dimension of taste that lingers long after your meal is done. Freshness is paramount here, with generous servings of vibrant herbs and sprouts that add brightness and texture.
Customer reviews highlight Thanh Xuan’s steadfast authenticity. One diner praises the “clear, flavorful broth” and “soft pork slices,” calling it a “local gem.” Another describes the dishes as impressively authentic, recalling the noodle soups they enjoyed back in Vietnam. While the restaurant’s limited English communication and absence of a pictorial menu may require a bit of patience, the authentic flavors and sincerity of the cooking more than compensate.
For anyone craving a satisfying Vietnamese noodle experience away from the tourist trail, Thanh Xuan’s blend of simplicity, authenticity, and depth of flavor makes it well worth a visit. Whether you’re returning for a comforting bowl of Bún Riêu or are eager to try the rich Bún Mắm, the restaurant promises a humble yet unforgettable culinary journey that truly honors traditional Vietnamese home cooking.

A place offering a simple, home-style cooking experience. The dishes were solid. The Bánh Canh noodles had a nice texture, and the Bún Riêu was flavorful, though it lacked the wow factor. It’s not a place for gourmet dining, but if you’re looking for a simple and comforting Vietnamese bowl of noodles with a home-cooked feel, it’s definitely worth checking out.

The taste of Bun Rieu and Bun Mam was delicious. I really like them, but I hope they can clean the shrimp prior to cooking. I found out the black long strip on top of the shrimp (sorry, dont know what it called) picture provided. I know it is edible, but I don't usually eat it.

Thanh Xuan only has three items on their menu: Bun Rieu, Banh Canh and a Chicken Rice dish. My mum raves about their Bun Rieu and Banh Canh and we finally tried it - they were absolutely delicious and so clear. The broth had so much flavour and the pork slices were so soft. Definitely a local gem!

One of the most authentic flavor in Sydney. It may looks simple, but all the food in the bowl was impressively amazing, especially that egg patty to absorb the flavor from the soup and got its own taste. Can't wait for my next visit.

Authentic Vietnamese food - took awhile to comprehend that this place serves only three dishes and there was no menu (should of read the reviews). No regrets though, because both noodle soup packs a punch in flavour and freshness. Good serving size too. Communication was a little tricky to navigate as the waitress spoke minimal English and there weren't pictures for you to refer to - unless you frontloaded your vocabulary with what banh canh and bun rieu was. Other than that, nice comfort food for a rainy day!

An authentic Vietnamese restaurant that only sells 3 types of noodles. We tried to Bun Rieu and Bun Mam. The tomato broth had a good balance of flavour and there were lots of ingredients inside, but wasn't too heavy. The crab cakes absorbed the flavour of the broth and reminded me of noodles I had in Vietnam. Will come back

Located next to the station with plentiful parking nearby, this modest eatery delivers authentic Vietnamese flavours under an affordable price tag. I ordered the bun mam which was served with a generous side of mint, sprouts and banana blossom. I don't think many places around (even in Cabra) even serve this dish, so I was pleasantly surprised with the unfamiliar punch of seafood flavour that came through, elevated with a bit of lime and chilli. An ample variety of seafood was served in the dish, building on that interesting seafood flavour. Very satisfied, will recommend Thanh Xuan to friends and family.
